Just out of curiosity, and I’m sure this has been asked before, but… how exactly does one pronounce “Nemsiiki”?
How about… [nɛmsiːki] ?
Or better : [nɛm’siːki]
Sounds good to me.
So we’ve got internal strife at the Nemsiiki order.
I doubt there is an order of any sort. More like our 2 assassins have Nemsiiki-like abilities but are not properly Nemsiiki. The sum up introducing the story-arc talked about “meeting aliens that are not so alien”. If you ask me, those 2 belong to the same type of spiritual entity the Lady belongs to. In other words, they are related to her origins.
That thought matches their real appearance, by the way. Although the Lady herself lacks the “scars”, but that could be a “males-only” trait.
Still, that does not quite answer the “why” question.
Well, if the Lady is to be believed, hardly anyone is ‘properly Nemsiiki’ anymore:

But I think you’re right that there isn’t really an ‘order’. The impression I at least have gotten is that Nemsiiki are free to use their skills as they will — and many of them choose the mercenary’s path. Those two certainly seem to be such.
Who they’re working for is a more interesting question, if you ask me.
@Darth, while they did not recognize “The Lady” in her current cage, one of them did say “ah, so you are also a Nemsiiki. That means I don’t have to hold back.”
uhl: They seemed to notice when her eyes turned, yes. And of course they have red eyes themselves.
It’s funny, because I don’t remember the other Nemsiiki we’ve seen (like Jason) having red eyes. I wanted to look up a picture of him as a ghost, but the relevant parts of the archive seem to be missing.
@Albert : most likely because these 2 come directly from Subrealm. Unlike Jason for instance. That’s what makes me think they are similar entities to the Lady herself.
True, true. But dead humans do tend to take on the nature of subrealm natives after some time. (e.g. Leonard Pathmanathan.)
I guess Jason probably hadn’t been dead long enough for that, though.
I so want to contribute to this discussion, but am afraid I might say something spoiler-y…
Hmm? I can only speculate, but does it perhaps pertain to the strength of the red glow in the individual’s eyes?
Heh. Nice try there…
One thing I can definitely confirm is that Jason’s eyes have never been portrayed as red, at least not on purpose. Nor Whisper’s (to offer another example).
Yeah, after looking at some more panels with him I see Jason has brown eyes.
And I had forgotten Whisper was a Nemsiiki.
