Well, wadaya know? Jason does care about someone other than himself. Of course he’s way too much of a bestial asshole to care, but it’s an interesting irony. He does seem rather misinformed … wonder what he was told that made him think this zombie thing was going to result in “the mother of all come-backs?” And by whom?
And why did the bodies all suddenly go wild? Were they latent zombies too? Did they all sense an “angel of death” was near and instinctively seek release? Or was that a little present or insurance left by Eleanor?
Oh well, guess we’ll find out when we get there. 😉
@Blake: Don’t kid yourself, that’s a fantastic run. I’ve seen comics with at least one typo a week. xD Congrats. 🙂
oh also he might have been misinformed from elanor, or just thought that with time they would be pretty much fully alive instead of staying like zombies for the rest of their unnatural lives…also i wonder if the doctor has had to kill her husband by now or if he’s noming on her atm
At first, I thought she was consoling Jason on the loss of his friends. (And perhaps, to an extent, she was.) But, yeah, the last panel is more like The Lady we know… to an extent.
I find several questions with this strip, however:
1) How does The Lady expect Jason to “mend” Rona’s flesh? Is she merely talking about stopping the bleeding, then disinfecting and bandaging the wound?
2) Where is Dr Dreyfuss in all this? Did her husband take a bite out of her, too? (Yeah, I know. We’ll find out…)
3) Why does The Lady seem to care so much about Rona’s well-being? We’ve seen her act pretty cold and self-centered. But we’ve also seen her act the part of a reluctant heroine. She’s tried to abandon Rona before, but she seemed to have a change of heart and returned to help them out.
Perhaps more than any other character, I find it difficult to analyze The Lady’s motivations and personality. But, I think she’s supposed to be an enigma. She’s ancient, mysterious, and the central figure of this comic. That said, I suspect she either finds Rona to be fascinating. Her comments before suggests she respects Rona for braving her world and the unknown, despite the danger and fear. And I’m reminded of how frequently The Lady has had to rediscover or relearn things long forgotten lately. (“It’s been an AGE since…”)
Also, I’m pretty sure her prior reluctance to rescue Rona or anyone else is her value of freedom above all else and how she would see forming any relationship, even just friendship, as a threat to that freedom. Ties that bind, and all that.
On the other hand, for a fallen ‘Angel of Death’, The Lady seems to be showing a lot of concern for Rona’s physical body. I mean, wouldn’t she see the loss of Rona’s body as beneficial for Rona, since she would be free of that prison of flesh? But, I suppose she’s concerned because it means a whole lot to Rona and she would be upset with The Lady if she did not at least try to recover it. And The Lady might even feel some responsibility for the situation, since Eleanor used Rona to get to The Lady.
1) In the flashback where much younger Jen beats Jason and co up, we saw Jason make a remarkably quick recovery. His friends asked him how it was possible and he just said “How do you think?”, like it was a stupid question. He also talks a lot about the power of mind over body.
Re xpacetrue’s last point: Remember, the historical reference was to Nemesis. Also remember that the lady has been pretty scrupulous in bringing death only to those who are seeking it… despite the fact that she isn’t fond of senserealm herself.
I _think_ I’m starting to understand some of the lines she draws, if not necessarily what motivates her. And I’m still waiting to find out how she got anchored to Jan and senserealm in the first place; we’ve seen an exorcism in the backstory, but it isn’t clear whether that was also related to the Lady, or if she got caught in some kind of backwash from that, or if it’s nothing that obvious.
I too was struck by the phrasing… which does seem rather stilted unless there is more to Jason (or Rona?) than we’ve realized.
I can think of two reasons why the Lady keeps helping Rona.
Rona’s one of the few people who didn’t react to her presence with total hatred and fear, (Willow too), despite the overwhelming threat she represents, and she also Jen’s best friend and roommate, so the Lady will have a line on what’s going on then Jen’s awake.
Also , the Lady seems to get a charge out of giving people what they want the most, and seeing what happens. With Rona, it was a look into subrealm.
after reading about Jason’s ‘healing power’, it seems to me that Jason (in Rona) was about to try and heal the zombies. The lady, far from consoling Jason, was pulling was re-directing his attention.
I don’t remember Jason have that power. re-read the story. yeah, you’ve said that a long time ago!
Jason appropriated Rhona’s “Flesh”, Now The Lady is basically ordaining “get the hell out” of Rhona’s body. At least that’s what I think. “Mend the Flesh” is a somewhat literary way of saying “Restore to original”.
I can’t decide whether Jason is upset about Phil or is freaked out about his old body getting blown to bits. Not that seeing yourself walking around as a corpse is much better. On the other hand, let’s face it, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have many other friends.
Upon looking at the image closer, it seems like Jen/Lady is barefoot…
Walking around barefoot in those bloody, slimy, corpse ridden, flesh rotting dungeon cells? Ew! And I realize Jason is in shock, but he/she is kneeling in a pool of zombie blood.
@xpacetrue:when you just killed you only friends you kinda tend to be shocked and dont care very much where you collapse.
second to answer your questions the doctor’s area had medical supplies and its bite so its not a oh my gods it gnawed off my shoulder bite. so there could be bandages and other medical supplies to help heal the injury and also stave off infection to rona’s body..
i think the good doctor is dead due i think she died to the first attack, as to why she cares about rona you forgot what she did she made her a servant tp her like her father was “her gift to her” and she went all the way to get rona chopped up soul, my guess that rona is there waiting for jason to vacate her body so rona can get back in her body again
As for “The Lady” helping Rona, another factor to consider. “You were there at my time of need. I do not forget such things.” Rona is apparently one of the few beings that has given aid to “The Lady” without seeking reward first. It’s just enlightened self interest to help those who help you, so that they continue wanting to do so.
“or face or” typo
*whistles*
Fixed. Thanks.
After 400+ pages, my first typo. ‘Twas a nice run while it lasted.

It’s obvious that he has powers of some sort.

You’d better fix her home girl, Jason.
There’s wrath and then there’s wrath.

hmm, that sentence should’ve read
“…consoling Jason, was pulling him back to re-direct his attention..”
