Thought balloons! OMG!
Yes… * shudder*… the latest Twilight Lady tale, “Peace Time”, utilizes this much-maligned storytelling device.
Sometime in the 90s, it became “uncool” in mainstream comics to use thought balloons, a traditional method of offering the reader a glimpse into the mind of a character.
I’ve always wondered why. The quirks and conventions that make the medium unique should be celebrated, not frowned upon… and certainly not phased out in favor of a “more cinematic” approach.
One of the dangers of such a trend is that comics could eventually become, if they haven’t already, a mere vehicle for wannabe screenwriters.
Personally, I’ve always loved that in comics you are privy to a character’s inner world, their thoughts and hidden feelings, in a way that is impossible to capture in any other visual medium.
It always bothered me when characters in comics were speaking AND thinking aloud all the time (and yet noone hears them).
Down with eternal speech bubbles!
Why don’t they just use boxes and/or employ a different font reflecting the character’s mindset or emotional state.
Thought bubbles…very retro. Been awhile since I’ve seen them. Brings back the days when I was little and read those old comics from early on. Awww! Memories. I am 18 and I am saying this. Yeesh. Hahaha! My dad had a lot of old comics from when he was little.
I don’t see any problem with thought balloons; it’s the difference ebtween a cartoon format and film, say.
. o O { I wonder who commented to her… } O o .
“Hahaha! My dad had a lot of old comics from when he was little.”
You are SO lucky. 🙂
I found this comic by accident and tayed up a good portion of last night reading the whole thing.
The story is brilliant, the artwork incredible and the the characterizations are fabulous.
I can understand why The Lady thinks Jen is an idiot. She’s a sweet idiot, but an idiot nonetheless.
“Smile you son of a bitch” was my favorite random quote by Sawyer. I love me some jaws.
I wonder how Patrice will take Rona’s revelation, and frankly Helen seems slightly nuts anyway. I wonder if that’s a symptom of being dead and not knowing it.
Elenore…is she by chance Jen’s mother? Her doggedness when it comes to The Lady and her reference to revenge long overdue seems to fit with a mother blaming the “demon” that posessed her child.
Z…he irks me. “if we can avoid killing”. I agree, if you CAN avoid it. Sometimes in life the moment calls for you to kill or be killed. And his comment about Jen seeking out dangerous situations so she has an excuse to kill…if The Lady were the monster people claim then she wouldn’t NEED an excuse. And more people would be dead. It’s convenient how Z managed to forget that the people he was trying to “save” from Jen were more like his description of Jen than Jen is. In other words, they look for any excuse to kill people, it doesn’t even have to be a dangerous situation. After all, look what they did to Z and Rona.
I read how you can’t find a copy of Once I Was the Jeff Buckley bootleg cover so here…

I found a torrent to it and uploaded it for you. I figure with all the effort you put into this you should get a little something in return.
Thanks a million and I can’t wait for the next installment.
Wow, thanks. Yeah, that’s the one. Great performance by Jeff. The context also makes it extra poignant.
