Iron Man, Dark Knight, blah blah blah…
Nothing against those guys, but this is the summer movie that’s filling me with anticipation and dread. Yes, dread.
Readers of Twilight Lady know I have a penchant for characters with dual personas. So naturally, Hulk has always been my favorite comic character. (But if you’ve read my Hulk fanfic comic, you already knew that.)
Hmm… or maybe it’s because I grew up reading Hulk comics that I have a penchant for characters with dual personas. The chicken, the egg, etc…
My main problem with screen versions of Hulk to date is that the green goliath himself barely registers as a character in these adaptations. In the old TV series, he was a plot device… Banner gets in trouble, Hulk shows up to save the day. In the Ang Lee movie, he just goes around breaking a lot of stuff (though that was much more fun to watch than Nick Nolte chewing on scenery and cables).
Whether this new movie succeeds or fails, for me, hinges on how much emphasis it gives to the conflict between Banner and Hulk. Banner and Hulk must be shown to have distinct personalities that are fighting for dominance. That’s the core of what the character is all about. And give ol’ greenskin some actual dialogue, for pete’s sake! It’s called being true to the source material.
You mean he doesn’t just say, “Hulk Smash!”? :O
Admittedly, I’ve never read the series, but with as brilliant as classic comics are, I can feel confident in presuming that green machine has some provocative dialogue, especially if this is a true case of multiple personality ‘disorder’. (The diagnostic frame has been changed to disassociative identity disorder, for the big psychological association feels that there are not multiple personas exactly.)
And I lost my train of thought. Yay for angel wings on Twilight?
Hey, I found this comic on accident, and fell in love with it. I check it every day before I go into work.
But I was wondering, I love the animation; how do you do it? Is it a computer application or something?
Thanks, Rissa. I use a 3D character animation program called Poser. I also play with the renders in Photoshop to get the right look.
Terry, unfortunately the multiple personality aspect, which has been brilliantly dealt with in the comics especially by writer Peter David, is often glossed over or completely ignored in movie and TV versions of the Hulk. I hope it is actually explored in this new movie, though I very much doubt it, based on what I’ve heard and read so far.
I can only hope that with such a brilliant character actor as Ed Norton that they take advantage of his talents and flesh out the character of the hulk as more of a dualistic personality. I also love the darkhorse type anti-heros. That’s why I love Hulk and the Maxx and Han Solo, but it is like writers, particular hollywood writers, have a hard time writing characters that are inherently “good” but flawed.
