okay. im just gonna say this out loud. this comic is extremely unrealistic. i know, its fictional. but their should be at least some real elements. i mean really, someone was just killed, and when bobby goes to confront them, he just lets them off with a warning, not to mention he brings his alien friend and her friends along as if they think its some sort of experiment? hello! someone was just killed! does this look like the right time for an experiment? seriously! you may be able to predict movements of others, but you can’t predict where bullets will hit if they’re fired from a gun!
frankly, the problem with this comic, is that it brings in mature subject matter like murder, but tries to play it safe with smaller dialogue that appeals to a much younger class, as if its a cartoon. to the people making this comic, i really like what your doing here, but if you want this comic to be great, you either need to choose mature dialogue, or make this the only instance of mature subject matters. you can’t do both.
Thanks for the feedback. You make some interesting, and valid, points.
I have a question. This part made me curious…
“someone was just killed, and when bobby goes to confront them, he just lets them off with a warning”
It sounds like you’re not only advocating vigilantism, but consider it as something commonplace and even expected. Is that the case in your sphere of existence? Or am I misinterpreting what you said?
in regards to the above “letting them off with a warning for murder” comment:
You realize he probably was going beat them up if not kill them. however 2 things happened:
1: he knows he cannot win in a straight fight against the other alien, seeing as how he himself got beaten very quickly.
2: even if he did try to do something again, his friends would have stopped them.
so no, he was not ‘willing’ to let them off with a warning. he was trying to sound as menacingly as he could given the fact he knew he could do nothing.
unless you mean the alien friends… in that case, I would suggest reading the series again, as what you said is literally what they were talking about with ‘the way’ vs ‘the blood’ or in other words, the alien friends are, in so many words, pacifists.
so no, they would not seek revenge. especially for murder. (at least as far as we have been shown, seeing as how the person who died was mostly unknown to them for as much as we know.)
I think bostonianful’s comment was to some extent focused on a poor example, but he has some real concerns.
I started reading this comic for the cute art and creative background. I think it’s worth coming back to, if I have time, but you don’t have me hooked.
I do appreciate that you include more dialogue and you advance the plot more per page than many comics, but nonetheless the emotions don’t seem complex. In the last few pages, Bobby was angry, confused, then scared, then angry again, then submissive, then angry while thanking, then determined, then softened. Pick a few emotions and develop them more steadily for a scene?
Some scenes flow too quickly, the most recent being the fight. Good fighters mostly know what the other guys is going to do, that’s why the fights last so long. Ten seconds might reasonably land a strike on Bobby chin and make him back off, but not send him to the ground. These moments make trite emotional readings easier.
And you might ease up on the “warning” line in the comment. I was wondering why Bobby didn’t call the police as soon as blondie had left. Track him, phone someone, or if he’s more deeply disturbed just run five miles or go eat two pizzas or whatever he copes with. He’s a hot-head, so it seems weird to play the cool-cat act.
One thought, I don’t know how many notes you make on the plot while you develop it, but it’s A-okay practice to include narration between the panels if you think it makes things clear. If the Starliners can read into Bobby’s thoughts and emotions, why not the audience too?
J.K. no, its not in my ”sphere of existence”, its in my way moral understanding. when some freaking alien from another planet commits murder, they need to be dealt with. period. if a friend of mine is killed, id do more than just ”give him a warning”. i would either kill/wound him or turn him over to the police, they are still looking for the shooter aren’t they?
banaman.
1. who said i would be using my fists? the aliens can predict someone else moves when fighting hand to hand, they cannot however predict where bullets or other projectiles are gonna hit when thrown or shot. so i would bring a gun and try to wound him, or a tazer, or some sort of weapon thats deadly at close range. i however would not, just leave him off with a warning.
2. they wouldn’t exactly be considered friends if they tried to tell me what to do, not to mention if they’re not gonna control other aliens to make sure they don’t bad things, (like, oh i don’t know, murdering a friend) then i have no choice but to deal with them myself.
and honestly, as i said, seem kinda unrealistic. i mean again, someone was just killed and yet those aliens are still able to draw a smile. seriously, WTF!? just because they’re pacifists doesn’t mean they should still be happy when someone just died, neither should they keep the friend of the said victim from avenging his friends death. also, as it turns out, not all the aliens are pacifists (im referring to alien that killed bao).
You might not remember my comment when Bao was murdered, you might not remember me. What is clear though is that you do not remember what this comic is about. The pain of losing Bao is not supposed to inspire a spiral of hate. Where do you think violence comes from?
When people gather into groups we find many reasons to fight other groups. Hatred of aliens is a failure to recognize people. Cool your jets and think. Emotional pain, when unchecked, solves nothing. The ‘aliens’ are smiling to keep their cool. Try it sometime. Meditate.
@J.K. – Do it up bro. Keep at it and maybe you will reach hot heads.
I think Fox has it. The comic focuses on only one source of human violence, ‘hatred’. It’s a minimalist type plot to match the minimalist art: black and white, no shadows, outlines prominent. It’s essentially a feelgood comic, despite it’s deliberate contrast with harsh events. The comic is creative and enjoyable, so don’t overthink it.
Bostonianful, I think for purposes of the comic aliens are people too. I don’t think that’s in doubt for any main characters. Also, bullets are carefully designed to take predictable paths, even when ricocheting. No, aliens dodging bullets because they know where someone will shoot is not realistic, but don’t be upset if you see it in future comics. Our authors enjoy expressing themselves here, and that’s a good thing.
Thanks everyone, for this rather thought-provoking discussion.
All I can say is… as we discover more about the Starlin folks, you’ll see it’s not quite as simple as “the aliens are pacifists” (though based on what’s been revealed so far, I understand they would be perceived that Way… pun intended).
Fox: ”The pain of losing Bao is not supposed to inspire a spiral of hate.”
seriously? of course its suppose to inspire a spiral of hate, because bao was bobby’s friend. so when a friend dies or is murdered, you just forget it and move on? no, you get angry because you want to do something about it. so of course it inspires hate, it always does. its called being human. now, you want a solution on how to stop this? simple, don’t allow anyone to die. im aware that the aliens are considered pacifists, but if that where true than that ALIEN wouldve never killed bao, as we’ve already seen, not all the aliens are pacifists, otherwise bao would still be alive.
”Cool your jets and think. Emotional pain, when unchecked, solves nothing. The ‘aliens’ are smiling to keep their cool. Try it sometime. Meditate.”
well sorry if i don’t have a big grin on my face after seeing one of my friends get killed! seriously, you say emotional pain solves nothing, when in truth, it solves more than just standing around and doing nothing like these pacifists have been doing so far. frankly, i would be angry, not only at the alien who killed bao, but at the other aliens too, they come to our world trying to learn and when one of them kills a human, they just let it go? yeah, because they’re pacifists. well im human, so excuse me if i want to do something about the alien jerk that killed my friend, rather than stand around and let more aliens run rampant because their own species or leader, couldn’t keep them under control. if the aliens wouldn’t deal with them, i would. its my planet and it was my friend that died after all.
publius: a feelgood comic? if that where true, their wouldn’t be any ”harsh events”. however, it leads me to believe that J.K. has something planned for this comic that won’t make it as ”feelgood” as it seems to be. and im not over thinking it, im merely basing it on the fact that if you put humans in a comic, you should mind as well put in the way a human being may act when faced with someone/alien that killed their friend. any normal human would become enraged if they came face to face with someone who unjustifiably murdered of their friend. so im not necessarily over thinking it, im looking at it from a realistic point of view. but by all means, i guess im not one to judge.
also, for the guns, yeah, people try to aim their guns to hit specific targets, but in the hands of someone an average gunman 80% of the time, they will miss their intended target, mainly due to windspeed and such, even when aiming at a target the size of a human being. so as i said, bullets when fired from a gun, are usually unpredictable. besides, even if they could predict and dodge bullets, i would bring a shotgun. try to dodge that.
Yep the ship is real
Ariel:”Do I look that sheltered to you?” Well to be honest yes.
@sansin indeed, I am now shipping Brent and Maddy too
Hmmm… ‘lifty’
That is right, too much optimism can be dangerous.
